The electric bass guitar is an essential part of many modern music genres, especially in contemporary popular music, jazz, and rock.  A member of the guitar family, it produces low-pitched sounds, providing the foundational rhythm and groove in a band's music.  The electric bass guitar is typically a solid-bodied, four-stringed instrument, although there are variants with five or six strings as well.  Some bass guitars are fretless, allowing for unique playing styles.  The primary function of the bass guitar is to provide the bassline connecting the harmony and rhythm of a song.

Unlike the acoustic bass, which relies on the resonating hollow body to amplify sound, the electric bass guitar generates sound through pickups and an electronic amplifier.  These convert a string’s into electrical signals, which are sent to an amplifier.  The electric bass guitar was first introduced in the 1930s, gaining significant popularity in the 1950s and 1960s. Innovations in technology and design have led to various bass guitar models with distinct tones and playing characteristics.  The bass guitar is either plucked or slapped with the fingers or picked.
