Requinto Strings

Requinto Strings

A requinto is a scaled-down version of the classical guitar, with a scale length ranging between 52-54cm. It is tuned a fourth higher than the standard classical guitar, A2-D3-G3-C4-E4-A4. While requinto guitars often incorporate a cutout to access higher frets, this feature is not universal.

Traditionally, the requinto is a staple in guitar orchestras, complementing other guitar sizes. It holds significant cultural importance in Mexican and Ecuadorian traditions, particularly in national songs like pasillos and boleros, where it contributes greatly to improvisation. The playing style of the requinto remains largely consistent across different songs, rarely deviating from its established norms.

The popularity of the requinto guitar has surged in Mexico and other parts of Latin America. In Mexican music, it is prominently featured in Trío romántico groups. Requintos crafted in Mexico typically boast a deeper body compared to standard classical guitars, measuring around 110 millimeters (4.3 inches) as opposed to the standard 105 millimeters (4.1 inches). Conversely, requintos manufactured in Spain tend to maintain the same depth as standard classical guitars.
