Mandola Strings
Complete sets are listed in the sections below. Individual mandola strings can be found in the Single Strings section.
The mandola, known as the tenor mandola in Ireland and the UK, is a fretted, stringed musical instrument akin to the mandolin as the viola is to the violin. It features four double courses of strings tuned in fifths to the same pitches as the viola (C3-G3-D4-A4), a fifth lower than a mandolin. The mandola, although less common today, serves as a precursor to the mandolin, with the term "mandolin" itself meaning "little mandola."
Primarily found in folk music, particularly Italian folk music, the mandola also has a presence in Irish traditional music, albeit less frequently than instruments like the octave mandolin, Irish bouzouki, and modern cittern. Similar to the guitar, the mandola can be either acoustic or electric.
Mandolas are occasionally featured in mandolin orchestras alongside other members of the mandolin family, including the mandolin, mandocello, and mandobass, with the octave mandolin, also known as the octave mandola, sometimes included as well.
At JustStrings.com, we carry the best mandola strings manufactured by leading American and international string companies. Featuring eight strings paired in four unison courses, most mandola strings are phosphor bronze wound to produce a brilliant and full-sounding tone. You will also find mandola strings in silver, bright bronze and flat wound chrome. The tension you choose will depend on the characteristics of your mandola. For a warmer sounding instrument, alighter tension may help to brighten the tone of your mandola.
