GHS Bass Boomers Short Scale .090, 3038

The GHS strings are flawess in projecting sound. I have never seen strings that have colored cloth from the nut and around the peg. The strings played good and I removed the silk from the string and they still played well. Why does GHS have that colored cloth on the strings. Have I damaged that cloth and played the string around the peg it winds around. Am interested in the purpose of the silk like material on the string and removing it would injure the peg. Never have I seen like that from Ernie Ball, Fender or anyone. Thanks for the answer to this. Gene Van Dyke
